Anglers compete for prizes and trophies, targeting snook, redfish, permit, bonefish and tarpon. Trophies are awarded the individual grand champion and runner-up, grand champion team and runner-up, and champions in the fly, artificial and general tackle divisions. The first leg of the triple-crown Florida Keys Gold Cup Championship Series is characterized by high-flying sail action, conservation and sportsmanship. It's also the only tournament in the Gold Cup series to offer a junior division for anglers aged 16 and younger. Unlimited anglers are allowed per vessel.

Islamorada / December 16-18, 2016 Islamorada Junior Sailfish Tournament

Recreation for teens in the Florida Keys can mean learning from experienced local captains and mates to tie a bimini or rig ballyhoo. One weekend each year anglers aged 16 and younger can apply such lessons in this competition. A maximum of six anglers is allowed per boat.

Key Largo / January 6-8, 2017 Key Largo Sailfish Challenge

Heralding the height of sailfish season, each year this boat tournament is characterized by friendly but serious competition, professionalism and camaraderie among anglers who put their 20-pound test line skills to task. Up to four anglers per boat can register for the event. Cash prizes and trophies await the first- through third-place teams. Auctions and raffles are to highlight the event.

Islamorada / January 16-17, 2017 Al Flutie Over the Hill Rip-Off Sailfish Tournament

This event is "almost too much fun for old guys to handle." Locally called the Flutie, the tournament has donated $428,000 to local and national charities. Anglers age 50 and over are welcome.

Islamorada / January 25-26, 2017 IFC Sailfish Tournament

Presented by the Islamorada Fishing Club, this is the final leg of the Florida Keys Gold Cup Series, with a typical field of up to 30 boat teams of elite sport fishermen. A total cash payout for a full field at the IFC Sailfish Tournament could reach $30,000.

This one day, fun day of Sailfishing is for ladies only. The tournament offers great prizes and fun filled evenings with proceeds to benefit spay and neutering of Keys wild cats thru the casting for cats charity.

Tournament anglers are to compete to catch the most inches of snook and redfish on fly in a challenge where one inch equals one point. Awards are to be given to the grand champion and runner-up, and to the anglers who catch the largest snook and redfish. The field is limited to 30 boats.

Anglers vie for top-honor trophies for catches of bonefish and redfish in this newly formatted event, appealing to a broader spectrum of anglers. Divisions in the tournament's new format include bait, artificial and fly. Awards als1o are to be given for total release points for each species and to the high-point angler for each day. An overall grand champion is to be named for both bonefish and redfish in the three categories.

Hosted by Jimmy Johnson, two-time Super Bowl winning coach and former head coach at the University of Miami, this prestigious event benefits the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, a South Florida-based cancer-related research, diagnosis and treatment facility. A tournament honoring the memory of Nick Sheahan, a Florida Keys student, funds from this event benefit a namesake community scholarship fund.
